Getting started

How do I install Zesty Options?

Install Zesty Options from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions it asks for. The app opens inside your Shopify admin.

Then follow the setup guide on the app home screen: create an option set, assign it to a product, and add the Zesty Options block to your product template in the theme editor.

Install free on Shopify

Do I need Shopify Plus?

No. Zesty Options works on every Shopify plan, including Basic.

Add-on pricing merges the add-on fee into a single cart line using Shopify's cart transform function, which is available on all plans and is not gated behind Shopify Plus.

How long does setup take?

The first option set takes about five minutes: create it in the app, assign it to a product, then add the app block in the theme editor.

It takes longer the first time you build a choice set for colour swatches or image options, because you supply the hex colours or image URLs yourself.

Will it match my theme?

Yes. The options are rendered by a theme app extension inside your product template, so they sit in your theme's own layout instead of an iframe.

Text, borders and fonts are inherited from your theme's CSS variables, which means the fields follow most themes automatically. You also get two per-block style settings: an accent colour and a corner radius.

Can I try it before installing?

The Free plan is yours to sit on: five product assignments, unlimited option sets, and no time limit. There is no trial clock to race.

Paid plans include a trial set up in the Shopify App Store listing. If you uninstall, your data is kept, so reinstalling puts everything back where it was.

Storefront and display

Options aren't showing on my product page. What do I check?

Check these in order. First, is the Zesty Options block added to that product's template in the theme editor? The block is per template, not global.

Second, is the option set assigned to that product or to one of its variants? Third, is the option set active and does it contain at least one field?

Fourth, open the product page in a private window. Themes and CDNs cache product HTML for a few minutes, so an assignment made a minute ago can take a moment to appear.

Where do I add the block?

Where do I add the options block?

Go to Online Store, then Themes, then Customize, and open a product template. Choose Add block, then Apps, then Zesty Options.

The setup guide on the app home screen has a button that opens the theme editor directly on the right template.

Can I change the styling and fonts?

The fields inherit your theme's typography, text colours and input borders, so there is usually nothing to change.

Per block you can set an accent colour and a corner radius. For anything deeper, the storefront stylesheet defines CSS variables you can override in your theme's custom CSS.

How do options look on mobile?

Fields stack to a single column on narrow screens and stay full width, so labels and inputs never squeeze side by side.

The file upload field uses the standard browser file picker, which on a phone offers the camera and photo library.

Do options reload when a customer switches variant?

No. The storefront script listens for variant changes, including the theme's variant change event, the variant form, and the variant parameter in the URL.

When the variant changes, the options for that variant appear in place. There is no page reload and no lost selections for fields that stay visible.

What happens when several option sets are assigned to one product?

All of them render on the product page, in the order they appear in the Assignments page.

Product-level assignments apply to every variant. Variant-level assignments apply only to their own variant. When a customer selects a variant, they see that variant's option sets plus the product-wide ones, in that order.

Option types

Which field types does Zesty Options support?

9: single line text, multi-line text, dropdown select, colour swatch, image select, single checkbox, checkbox group, date, and file upload.

Every field can be required or optional, can carry a default value, and can be shown or hidden by conditional logic based on another field.

How do I set up a colour swatch?

Create a choice set, add a choice per colour, and give each choice a colour value. Typing a standard colour name such as ivory fills in the hex value for you, and you can override it with any hex code.

Attach that choice set to an option field of type colour swatch and the storefront renders the choices as colour swatches.

How do I set up image select?

Create a choice set, add a choice per option, and give each choice an image URL. Attach the choice set to an option field of type image select.

Customers then choose from image tiles instead of a dropdown, which is the layout most stores use for fabric, finish or pattern choices.

What are the file upload limits and accepted types?

By default any file type is accepted, up to 20 MB per file. Twenty megabytes is Shopify's own staged upload limit, so it is a hard ceiling.

Per field you can narrow the accepted types, for example images only or PDF only, and set a lower maximum size. Invalid files are refused before the customer can add the product to the cart.

Where are uploaded files stored?

In your own Shopify Files library. The customer's browser uploads directly to Shopify, so the file never passes through our servers.

The order line carries the file name and links to the file, and customer file names are prefixed with zesty-customer- so you can find them in Content, then Files.

Files uploaded by customers who abandoned their cart are kept, not deleted. You can safely remove zesty-customer- files that have no matching order.

Add-on pricing

How does add-on pricing work?

You create one add-on product in your catalog and pick one of its variants as the add-on variant in the app settings. The price lives on that Shopify variant, never inside the app.

Then you give any option or choice a quantity: for example, quantity 1 for a one-off engraving fee, or quantity 2 for a two-colour print. When a customer selects it, the app adds the add-on variant to the cart with that quantity.

Why does the cart show one line instead of two?

Add-on fees are added as a second cart line with a hidden pairing token, then Shopify calls our cart transform function server-side before the cart renders.

The function merges the fee line into the product line and the customer sees one line at the combined price, for example 50.00 plus a 2.00 fee shown as 52.00. Cart, checkout and order all show the single merged line.

What happens with subscription products?

Subscription lines carry a selling plan, and Shopify does not allow a cart transform to merge a line that has one. So a subscription keeps two cart lines: the subscription and its add-on fee.

Everything else works normally. The options render, the fee is charged, and the customer sees both lines in the cart.

My cart line didn't merge. Why?

Three common causes. The line has a selling plan, so merging is not allowed. Another app has registered a cart transform, and Shopify allows only one per store. Or the cart line was added by a different app or by a custom integration, so it has no pairing token.

The app activates its cart transform when onboarding runs, which happens on install. If the merge stops working after another app was installed, that app is the likely owner of the cart transform slot.

Do add-on fees affect tax and discounts?

Because the fee is merged into the product line, the merged line price carries the fee and the tax rate that applies to the product applies to the total.

Discount treatment follows the parent product line rather than a separate fee line.

Plans and billing

What plans are available?

Four: Free with 5 product assignments and no add-on pricing, Pro with 300 assignments and add-on pricing, Growth with 1,000 assignments and add-on pricing, and Scale with unlimited assignments and add-on pricing.

Prices and trials live on the Shopify App Store listing. You pay through Shopify, so charges appear on your regular Shopify invoice.

What counts as a product assignment?

One product counts once, however many option sets are assigned to it.

Assigning at product level and assigning at variant level both count against the same product once, because we count distinct products that have at least one assignment. Choice sets never count against the cap.

What happens when I go over my cap or downgrade?

You freeze in place. Existing assignments keep working and keep rendering on your storefront, but you cannot add a new product until you are back under the cap.

Removing assignments is always allowed, and it is the way back under the cap. Upgrading lifts the limit immediately.

What happens to my data when I cancel or uninstall?

Uninstalling removes the app and resets billing to the Free plan, and we keep your option sets, choice sets and assignments so that reinstalling restores exactly what you had.

Your uploaded files stay in your own Shopify Files library and are untouched by us.

To have your data deleted, email hello@ludicas.app and we will remove it. Shopify's shop redaction request also triggers automatic deletion of your stored data.

Technical and performance

Does it slow down my storefront?

Products with no options cost nothing. The block checks a product metafield that the app keeps in sync, and renders no markup, no script and no request for products without options.

Products with options make one request for the assigned option sets, and that data is cached at Cloudflare's edge, so repeat views do not reach the database.

Where is my data stored?

The app runs on Cloudflare Workers. Option sets, choice sets, assignments and shop settings are stored in a managed PostgreSQL database hosted by Neon, reached through Cloudflare Hyperdrive.

Uploaded customer files are stored in your own Shopify Files library. We do not store customer names, emails or payment details: the storefront statistics we record are product level, not customer level.

Read the privacy policy

Can I export or import my option sets?

Yes. Settings has an export action that emails you three CSV files: option sets and their fields, choice sets and their choices, and product assignments.

The Import page accepts those same files, which is the supported way to move a setup between stores or restore it after a reinstall.

Are customer selections visible in my orders?

Yes. Every selection is written to the cart line's properties, so it appears on the order in your Shopify admin, on packing slips and on the order confirmation a customer receives.

Choice fields also store the underlying value under a hidden property prefixed with an underscore. Hidden properties stay out of the cart and checkout display but remain visible in the order admin, which keeps the order record complete without cluttering the cart.
